The Luau was probably my favorite. I remember some desert where the waiter would pour a flaming liquid out of a skull pitcher - probably Bananas Foster or some flambeed crepe of some sort. Kids were allowed to pick a gimcrack toy out of the pirate's treasure chest in the foyer upon leaving. I thought that was the greatest thing. I also remember the old Townhouse Restaurant up on Morehead, Providence, and Queens Rd. intersection. Legend has it that is where my mother and father met back in the 50s. Great BLT Club sammiches, and little bowls of black olives. And chocolate milk.
Then there was the Ramada Inn down on Independence. That was usually for Sunday brunch after church.
There was a cafeteria-style steak house on Independence in the strip mall that used to house Infinity's End. Can't remember the name. We'd go there quite a bit and I'd always get the hamburger steak.
Shakey's Pizza, near the K-Mart on South Blvd. Piano player and banjo player duo some nights. So cool.
My first dinner date at 16 was at Josh's up on Morehead just before the YMCA. Really hip and classy and cool and they let me and my girl get a caraffe of wine... at 16. Washing down the "Big Spud", an overstuffed baked potato of mammoth proportions. I was a prince of the city that night. Lisa Boyes was my date.
Honorable mention goes out to Lineburgers Fish Camo way out New Hope Rd. going towards the lake. Even though not technically Charlotte, more like Gastonia or Belmont, we ate there a lot on summer weekends as we always had a boat out on Lake Wylie.
And of course the old S & W çafeteria on Park Rd. Who could forget?
Also, when Dad was out of town Mom would take my sisters and me and our grandmorther, her mother, to the drive-in at Shoney's Big Boy on Morehead. We'd eat in the car, and thought that was the coolest thing ever. I'd give anything for that burgr again.
-Michael Carroll-Michael Carrollhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15420341394720960313noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7026129455602574581.post-54937370684004224082014-12-30T04:31:22.450-05:002014-12-30T04:31:22.450-05:00Born and raised in Charlotte, as a 61-year-old now...Born and raised in Charlotte, as a 61-year-old now, I have lots and lots of memories of favorite restaurants. But right now, what comes to mind were the just the good times that I shared as a child with mom, dad and my brother dining out. We weren't a wealthy family and we had many pleasant meals at some of the “cafeteria style" restaurants around Charlotte. Who remembers the Barclay Cafeteria in the Amity Gardens Shopping Center on Independence Boulevard (owned and operated *I think* by Slug Claiborne)? The S&W cafeteria on the upper floor at the Charlottetown Mall? The S&W Cafeteria at Park Road Shopping Center? Ketner's “Buffeteria" on South Boulevard? The thing I remember most about all of these places was that as you took your tray down the line, the first thing you came to were the desserts. S&W had the most irresistible whipped cream smothered strawberry shortcake I have ever had and I still remember the taste of that dessert to this day.Walter Steelenoreply@blogger.com
